Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

Dear baby girl!

This is getting serious! You are one amazing curious wonderful determined hilarious fun bundle of energy! I don’t know for how long I’ll continue repeating that it just doesn’t seem like you’ve been here for mere 5 months and yet I can’t believe how much you have grown in such little time.

You’re getting more and more fun to be around. Everything makes you laugh, you’re interested in everything, you want to touch everything, you want to move, move, move. I just love you so much more with each and every day. You are a true joy to us!

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

This month it has been picture overload here because you’re just the cutest little thing and you’ve been doing so many new things. I have not been able to capture even 1/10th of your charm and sweetness and character. The way you look at me when I carry you or nuzzle me and give me open mouth kisses when we lie next to each other is just not something I will ever be able to properly describe or capture on camera. It will be something special for me to remember forever.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

Here’s what is new this month:

at 4 months

You all of a sudden started reaching out and touching things when we carry you. We can’t go past a blank wall, let alone an item, without you reaching for it, or running your hands down it. Our bedtime routine has evolved from “saying good-night” to windows, pictures, lamp and monitor to “touching good-night”. Your favorite are our lamp and the monitor. When the routine starts, you are barely paying attention to windows and armoire, your eyes are on the lamp. Once we get to it, you grab the hanging switch and turn it on, then look at me in amazement, and then pull on it to turn it off and look at me again. You used to love touching the toy we call “no-fall-downer” (nevalyazhka), because you can’t tip it over, it just keep popping up. But you’ve moved onto the lamp. You love the monitor because you can attempt to get it in your mouth, though, of course, we don’t let you. (see video)

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You have noticed our kitties. You stare at them in wonder like they are the coolest things you’ve ever seen and I can see your mouth curve into a smile and you yelp “Ah!” Of course, you always try to touch them whenever they are close enough AND put them in your mouth which is pretty much impossible. Initially you’d tentatively copy how we pet the cats, you’d gently stroke their fur, but now you just go and grab them with your hands full of fur. It’s so cute! Putting that hand in your mouth before we managed to wash your hands- isn’t so cute! The cats are strangely ok with you. They let you pet pull their fur.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You ADORE playing peekaboo. You laugh until you start hiccuping. When I hide and say “Where’s mommy?” you quiet down waiting for me pop up with “Here I am!” (see video)

I can’t tell whether you hate not being around us or you have started the whole “separation anxiety” but there are times (most of the time) when, if we leave your side, you crane your neck and follow us with your gaze and as soon as you can’t see us, you start crying. There are other times, when you’re so consumed with a toy, that you don’t notice it, until you do and you start crying. I hate the idea that until you have object permanence if you don’t see us, it’s like we fell off the face of the earth.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

A couple of nights you have been waking up with your eyes wide open, ready to play and wouldn’t go to sleep. You’d fuss and fuss and fuss, until you start crying. Sometimes even the boob won’t put you to sleep. So daddy gets up and rocks you until you’re asleep again, unless you won’t go to sleep and then he wakes me up and I try to rock you, too. You usually fall asleep, but often it takes us 1.5 hours and neither one of us gets to sleep. Then other nights you wake up every 2 hours to be comforted by the boob or just my hand on you. I realize that you will not be sleeping well for many months. You’re not a sleeper and right now there’s just too much going on with you to sleep. I’ll wait, I’m in no hurry.

Your favorite activity is still scooting with leg support. If we don’t give you leg support, you somehow squirm yourself around the mat to face whatever it is you want.

4.5 months

Your hand coordination spiked up. You can now hold small board books and flip pages (but mostly shove them into your mouth). You can hold and pick up everything in your reach: calculator, bottles, toys. It’s so much fun carrying you around because you reach out and try to touch everything in sight and you’re just so interested. I love curiosity- that’s the cornerstone of learning.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You have now figured out the concept of purposefully calling for attention. Daddy was folding laundry while you were sitting in a swing one day (the hope was that you’d get rocked to sleep). Then suddenly you make a “fuss” sound. When daddy looked up to see what’s wrong, he saw you staring at him with a huge smile on your face. He was so excited to tell me about your new milestone.

You rolled again (tummy to back). There was no problem or hesitation in you. You just looked up at me, and rolled, as if to say “Silly mommy! You forgot that I had already rolled twice at 2.5 months, I can do it, I just don’t care to.” So that’s that. You like being on your tummy, so there has never been the need to roll more than a few times. And obviously, you’re much more focused on crawling, that rolling seems boring to you. Point taken. Moving on.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

UPDATE: I keep having to add to this post, as days before turning 5 months, you keep reaching milestone after milestone. As we were reading the cloth Peekaboo book, for the first time ever, instead of try to chew on it, you actually kept reaching out and opening the covers to see what’s under them. I don’t know if you really got the concept of hiding or it’s just a coincidence but it’s pretty cool either way.

And here’s a big one: you can sit unassisted. You can’t get into a sitting position on your own yet, obviously. But if you are sat up, you’ll sit for as long as you want or until you decide that you’d like to move now, at which point you’ll roll into a crawling position. You really dislike being stationary. Sitting is a new thing to you, so you’ll do it for a few minutes or more if there are toys involved. But otherwise, you just want to go, go, go. You still tip backwards once in a while, though, especially when mommy is behind you and she starts talking, you HAVE to see what she’s saying, so you look up and bam! I always catch you, of course.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You are slowly working on rolling from back to tummy. Obviously, you’re more interested in that type of roll since it would put you on your tummy and into crawling position. You can’t do it yet, though. You get as far as your side and you haven’t figured out that you can go further. But you have plenty of time, you’re only 5 months, little girl. I do love watching you figure things out, though. All I ever want for you is curiosity and determination. And then success in everything will follow.

A new thing you’ve been doing is vigorously shaking objects in your hands. Whether it’s a rattle or a cloth book, you’ll grab it and just go crazy shaking it. I really want to get it on video, but so far I haven’t been able to. Sometimes, you’ll shake your arms when there’s nothing in your hands and it looks like you’re beating your chest like a gorilla. It’s kind of funny! ๐Ÿ™‚

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

At almost 5 months

Your first crawling motion. You’ve been trying to crawl, but you haven’t had enough strength to pull yourself up. That is until 1 week ago, on Father’s Day, when you started to pick your butt of the floor just a little bit when your scoot with leg support in an effort to get on your knees. It’s so much fun to watch you try to do it. AND I managed to catch on video your VERY FIRST ATTEMPT at REAL CRAWLING! You pulled yourself up all by yourself and moved forward! YAY! It’s funny because I was so excited, that I would be walking around all pumped and then forget why I was so excited, until I’d remember “Oh, I caught Lexi’s first “crawl” on video!” {the joys of first time moms!}

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

Now after that first crawl attempt, you’re much more efficient at moving around. If I leave you on the mat to go grab a cup of tea or throw in a load of laundry, I always come back to see you a foot or two further than where you were facing a completely opposite direction. I think with this kind of determination a few more weeks and you will start moving on your own, which means we have to begin baby proofing. Hey, at least you’re super adorable in your knee pads.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

UPDATE: Things seem to change daily now. You have been getting up on your knees pretty well all day today (6/28/12) and trying to move. You still need leg support to move or you get frustrated, but you have grasped the main concept for crawling. You flail your arms and legs and when that gets you nowhere you try to pick your belly and butt off the floor by getting on your knees. Keep up the good work!

You’re losing your hair, girl! We cannot wait to see what it’s going to come back as. I am sad, though, because I LOVE your hair! And I also cannot even picture you as a blondie!

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

It’s very apparent to me that you’re growing and changing in more ways that we can see. We finally installed a new convertible car seat ( to hell with that infant one that was too hot and uncomfortable) and you love it. You spread your legs like a baroness and enjoy the ride. We went out to get some food and walk around with daddy the other day and you didn’t mind riding in the car one bit. You had so much fun being out and 4 hours after your previous nap, you blissfully fell asleep in your new car seat. That has NEVER happened before. We’re so excited to be able to take you places now and now that you are comfortable enough that you can fall asleep in your car seat.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You now look for fallen objects. This is HUGE, girl! You drop your toy and look down to see where it went! You actually understand the world. I love all the thinking going on in your brain.

You have developed a sense of humor too. Besides, laughing at pretty much anything, from a goofy face to a sound , you now crack up at specific things like the first time you put your toe into your mouth sent you into a laugh, or when one of our kitties sniff you, or when mommy carries you around in a funny way. I love that!

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

And just a few days before turning 5 months, you’ve developed a pincer grasp. You know what that means? That you are officially ready for solid foods, since that was the last thing we’ve been waiting on. We won’t do solids till your 6 months birthday anyways and we’ll be trying Baby Led Weaning method, but it’s still fun to reach that milestone. (which means I need to hurry up and research high chairs, safe dishes and read the book on BLW)

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You’re not really crazy about playing with toys (you do love to chew on them, though), you’d rather socialize with mommy and daddy, but lately since you started being able to move on your own a bit, you’ve been giving me 2-5 minutes at a time to do things while you try to crawl and squirm around the mat.

You also started sticking out your tongue and keeping it out. So for the past few days, all your photos look like this, you silly girl!

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

It’s clear how much you love your mommy and daddy and how much you enjoy our company. We have inside jokes already and it’s so much fun that you get them. When I put you on your tummy on top of my chest and you start crawling forward, you always end up with your slobbery mouth on my nose or eye or cheek and I start screaming saying “Ne kushai moi nosik!!! Ne kushai moi nosik!” (Don’t eat my little nose!) and you laugh and purposefully put your mouth on my nose and try to eat it. Same thing happens with the eye once you’ve moved past the nose!

You also have the most precious relationship with your daddy and he’s just SMITTEN by you!

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

You have no signs of teeth. Zero. And I am happy to keep it that way.

Your favorite toys currently are this Apple Park Organic Bunny teether & rattle (since you love it so much, I just ordered a Bunny Lovey from the same company) and Wonderworld Twisty teether and there are so many awesome things that we’ve discovered you love that I cannot wait to write about. But it’s definitely trial and error with you when it comes to baby products.

Soon we’ll be going to see grandma on daddy’s side in Orlando, so that will be a lot of fun and I am a bit scared since it is a 3 hour drive and we’ve never really driven that far with you. I hope you’ll do good.

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

I’m not sure how I feel about all these milestones. You’re going through them way too fast, I already miss my little girl. You are really something special. I am starting to see how you’re so much more than we ever imagined you’d be, so much better. And do you know what I love the MOST about you? That you have such a a STRONG personality! You know what you want, you demand it, you go for it, you’re curious and interested in everything. You have determination and drive, along with a fun spirit, even at this early age. These will be your best gifts when you’re older, trust me!

It was almost impossible to get a good picture of you this time, because you wanted to wiggle your way into a crawling position. I ended up with 2 decent pictures: one way – too serious, another – cross eyed. I chose crossed eyed because you can just see your personality shine through it. So when you read through this in many many years, remember- you didn’t give me much choice! LOL

Letters To Lexi: 5 Months

I’ve put together a 4th month video illustrating a lot of what you do these days and I’ll try to do one each month until you stop changing so fast. I’ll post it in a few days, if you nap well. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I have been reading your blog for a while now and thought I would come out of hiding. Alexis is adorable! I have a nine month old little girl myself. Isn’t it fun to watch them grow and learn new things? My little one started sticking her tongue out all the time a week or two before her first teeth came in (both broke through on the same day). As soon as those two came through, her tongue went right back in her mouth. The same thing happened as the top ones came in. Now, we can tell when she is getting a new tooth when her tongue will not stay in her mouth!

      • Get a amber teething necklace if you don’t already have one. Ours has been a life saver and I can tell a HUGE difference. A little boy in our playgroup broke Cathryn’s right when she was getting in two teeth and she wouldn’t nap and was waking up 5 or 6 times a night and when I got her new one in, she immediately took a great nap and slept 12 hours straight. I swear by it.

  2. We did Baby Led Weaning. It was awesome and I think my daughter is a better eater because of it. I hope you have as good of an experience with it as we did.

      • So did we! I love it. We waited until she hit the BLW milestones (the biggest of which is sitting up – well – unsupported) and started at around 5.5 months. The coincides with the physiological change of their gut going from an open to closed system.

It’s such fun and SO easy and at one, she eats everything! I have friends whose children are also a year and still eat mostly purees and I can’t imagine it. Once you see how well they can manage their own food you’ll wonder why anyone insists on purees and spoon feeding!

    • we are currently doing baby led weaning with my 9 month old. He wasn’t really interested much in eating until he was about 7 months, and I think his stomach wasn’t quite ready yet (he was 5.5 weeks early). But now he enjoys himself quite a lot, though I almost quit and did purees for awhile cuz he would cram a whole broccoli floret into his mouth, lol. But now he does better with that and if he is trying to put too much in his mouth, i just make small pieces for him to pick up instead. He loves zucchini and squash best of all. He likes asparagus pretty well also. He’s loved all the fruits I’ve given him as well! I love that he is learning to eat actual food, and some things that I didn’t even eat until I was an adult (asparagus)

      • Exactly. My daughter started to crawl really early, just before the 6 months. We have carpet, hardwood and tiles and she didin’t have any issue. It’s not like they are crawling continuously for hours.
I see those things and I can’t stop wondering how she will bend her legs, if they are too tight, etc…Besides it seems the hard ones may have the risk of slips on the tiles. So I see in those more harm than an actual help.

      • Their knees have to get used to crawling at some point. My son crawls on hard carpet and laminate and his knees look just fine without knee pads. They really aren’t necessary.

      • Tecnically they do, they just don’t fully harden until they’re older. Regardless, I think it’s the skin on the outside that Elena is trying to protect rather than the bone on the inside. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • I know the problem is the skin. But as I said, children don’t crawl continuosusly for hours, they crawl a bit, stop, seat, crawl again. There is no damage in the skin at all.

I’m for new products that makes life easier or safer, but as I said before, these ones don’t seem the most comfortable or appropriate for a baby that is learning to move

          • Honestly since Lexi doesn’t crawl yet, I have no idea how rough it can be on their knees. She only “crawls” around on the mat which is soft and smooth to her knees. I just know how it feels to me to crawl on my knees on carpet and tile and it’s not pleasant.

I love trying/buying new things to see if they work! I’ve discovered a lot of amazing products over the years by just being open minded and wasting money (lol).

So whether they are of use is yet to be seen, but for someone who hasn’t tried them to say they aren’t useful or protect the child from unnecessary pain is ignorant.

          • Can you please direct me to a reference that unequivocally states that “There is no damage in the skin at all”? EVER! Thanks! I’m sure no baby “needs” all these little luxuries, it’s Elena’s money and she’s providing a lot of valuable information here, I don’t know why people get so bothered by about what she spends her money on and why the debate as to whether she needs them. I don’t believe she’s telling anyone that if you don’t have this or that you’re a bad parent!

  3. Isn’t it amazing to watch them learn things? I teared up a bit the first time Avery clapped her little hands! It was the sweetest thing. And when Garrett learns a new word… I’m so proud of my babies! It’s so so wonderful watching them grow and learn new things, never gets old! Alexis is such a sweet baby girl, I’m so happy for you! That picture of her with Andrew is just adorable too!

  4. Alexis is absolutely adorable! My favorite picture is the one where she is in the stroller–it looks like she is thinking “yeah, I’m a big girl!”
I did the BLW with my youngest (now 11 months) and I LOVE it. We didn’t start until she was 6 1/2 months because she didn’t show an interest in food before than and I was fine with her just getting the BM. She eats such a wide variety of foods, LOVES her fruit and vegetables, and hasn’t turned anything down yet. Her favorite food is steamed baby carrots. Good luck and enjoy!

  5. She is a DOLL. Your blog just makes me smile! Lexi is growing up to be a curious, smart, funny little girl from the way that it sounds!

I would be really interested to hear more about BLW when you start it! I hadn’t heard of that before and I really enjoy your posts about different parenting techniques/issues and what you think of them.

  6. Oh, how I want to see pictures of Lexi and the kitties! My kitty avoids my little guy, still. ๐Ÿ™

  7. Soooo precious! Theo isn’t sitting up yet but rolling like crazy. Diaper changes are a real challenge now cause he just wants to get to his belly. It’s funny how different babies are even at the same age.
We too are doing BLW but after some research I have decided not to start him till around 8 months. He’s a fatty. Weighing in at 18.5lbs so that’s a gain of more than 12lbs in 5 months. I think my milk is enough for him for a while lol.

I’m curious to as to how you will feed her. I know twitter we talked about your husband being vegan and you being mostly vegan. I would assume since you are concerned about her DHA you will give her fish(?) but what other non vegan foods will you feed her? I bet you will do a big post about all this so don’t answer if you don’t want to spoil it but I am sure there are others who are wondering what foods you will feed her. Obviously all organic but ya. I’m excited to get him eating foods. But not till October!

    • I know it’s absolutely amazing how different babies are. Lexi couldn’t care less about crawling but will whine and fuss till she gets let support to crawl.

You know initially I wanted to wait till 8 months to introduce solids (I’m sure for the same reasons as you) but my pedi kinda scared me with “they might not accept new tastes if you wait too long”, which, honestly, I don’t know what the hell I am doing listening to my pedi anyways, she recommended a diaper cream full of parabens when I asked her for “smth natural”.
I’ll have to read up again and decide when. I know Lexi is ready if you go by the BLW milestones. She’s extremely curious, like rips food out of our hands and tries to drink our water, so I want to take advantage of that curiosity.
As far as fish, I’m actually going to wait to introduce it, since i don’t eat fish often. As long as she is nursing she’s getting a ton of DHA since I take 4 grams a day (both from supplements and foods).
There will definitely be no dairy or meat. I’d like to read a book about feeding your child {essentially} a vegan diet.
Otherwise we’ll have her eat what we do which is primarily beans, whole grains and fruits/vegetables.
I’m very curious as to what your plan is since you’re the only vegan with a small baby that I know of.

      • Waiting too long on introducing solids can also lead to an oral aversion to texture- that happened to one of my nephews. But going by the readiness signs and not the calendar is best. Babies will also just push the food out of their mouths if they’re not ready yet. We tried BLW (sort of, we didn’t know it was a thing, we just fed our baby the way our moms fed us.) The problem was that our son was so excited about eating food that he couldn’t manage to feed himself for awhile- which is crazy, b/c he puts everything else in his mouth. But with food, he would just flap his arms and bang on the tray table and beg for food till we actually put it in his mouth for him. So we mostly just smush up whatever we’re eating with a fork and feed it to him. He’ll figure it out eventually.

        • Yes, it’s really rare but I would be hesitant to put off trying solids until 8 months because I have a friend whose little boy ended up with a feeding tube because they waited so long to introduce solids and he never took to them. I agree with tarynkay – you should go by the cues Alexis is giving you, rather than some arbitrary date. What does your pediatrician say about a vegan diet for Alexis? I know a lot of vegans but they all do vegetarian diets for their kids and babies. We’re lucky that we have a great CSA where we get all local organic produce, dairy and meats so I don’t have to worry about any pesticides or GMOs for our little girl.

And on an unrelated note, and this may sound really dumb, but I can’t really picture what you mean when you say “assisted crawling”, I haven’t heard that term before – are you holding her around the waist and let her move her limbs around on the floor? We did something similar with our little girl around 4 months; she couldn’t reach a toy and would get so frustrated, so I’d “help” her along to get it – too cute! Now she can just roll and squirm to get what she wants (or scootch around on her back by digging her heels in and lifting her butt in the air, like she’s crawling while on her back, it’s a riot to watch!).

          • Well going by the cues would mean starting now, but her intestinal readiness isn’t in “sync” with her natural curiosity. We discussed it and decided that 6 months seems optimal. She will also get a chance to become a better “sitter”.

Re: crawling, all I mean by that is I put my hands up where she can push off with her feet. Otherwise she can’t gain traction and either scoots in a circle or “swims” most of the time. Now that she’s getting on her knees she can move on her own but she hasn’t gotten the hang of it yet.

        • Okay- I didn’t mean I would feed solids before 6 months. I don’t think it’s a big deal if people do, we just didn’t. I just meant that if all of the readiness signs were not there by 6 months, then I would wait longer. We tried at 6 mos first, believing that all of the readiness signs were present. He pushed the food out of his mouth. We tried again a week later, he loved it.

On baby vegans- would extended breastfeeding cover the nutritional deficits? Like the DHA and extra stuff that babies need? So maybe if you give her breastmilk until she’s 4 or something? I don’t know, I am not a nutritionist or a vegan. I’d be interested in hearing what you find out. I was just thinking about this the other day- there’s a high chance that my son won’t be able to tolerate cow’s milk, but all of the alternative milks seem too low in fat to cover the extra needs of brain development.

      • So to the commenters after me, I said AROUND 8 months. Maybe before or maybe after. Oral aversion to foods is not going to start at the time. It’s after 1 you risk it! If you know a kid who started before that it’s likely something else was going on.
        ANYWAYS
I will keep you updated on what we feed him but it’s mostly going to be what I eat. Beans, lots of veg and fruit. I will be avoiding wheat and my sis is a vegan chef and she makes an awesome gluten free vegan bread (not an easy thing lol) I avoid lots soy products but he will eat some tofu eventually. I also just found out he has a sensitivity to peanuts (throwing up a d bad poops every time I ate them) so I have stopped eating all peanut products. I juice everyday too. So he will get some of that when he’s older. And I make vega shakes for myself a couple times a week which I add flax to for my omega 3s.

I have had so many people tell me to start him on foods at 4 months. Like what the hell???? 6 months at least but I want him on my breast milk exclusively for at least 7-8.
Good luck! You’ll do what’s best for her, trust your own instincts. Your smart and very educated on what’s good for her.
Oh and I’m not doing any cereal, I found this website helpful:

        http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/delay-solids/

  8. Um, why do you photoshop her eyes?! Just kidding, she’s so adorable (and cheeky looking!) and her eyes are amazing!

  9. “So whether they are of use is yet to be seen, but for someone who hasnโ€™t tried them to say they arenโ€™t useful or protect the child from unnecessary pain is ignorant”

No more ignorant that the child will get sore knees from crawling

  10. She is just so adorable!! Enjoy those chubby cheeks and legs because I have a feeling they’ll disappear very soon when she starts getting mobile! My daughter used to wake up in the night to play for an hour around that age, and I know everyone says to be firm and get them back to sleep… But I’d just play with her, she’d go back to sleep in an hour either way. I think we were both happier that way. It didn’t spoil her… She still started sleeping thru the night shortly after that. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I have a kind of weird question. What do you mean by “spread your legs like a baroness?” I’ve never ever heard that expression before, and I’m terribly curious.

    • It’s a phrase we’ve come up with around here (has nothing to do with anything sexual). I think it might have originally come from a Russian saying “sitting like a baron”, meaning sitting very laid back and reclined with legs positioned in a spread comfortable manner. Since Lexi is a girl I’ve taken up saying “sitting like a baroness” whenever she’d sit back like most infants do with their legs spread. Especially if she’d have this funny “royal” expression.
I can see where this phrase might not make any sense in English, I think I had to explain it to hubby when I first used it.
