Many families have found themselves having to temporarily homeschool because of COVID-19. For those who have no experience in homeschooling, this is a complete shock and it can be difficult to figure out some activities for homeschooling to do with your kids to continue their education while providing an enriching experience during this difficult time. Many educational experts and teachers around the nation agree that this unprecedented time should be spent doing things your kids love and reigniting their fire for learning rather than trying to shove distance learning down their throats (which will cause more stress for both you and them).
Some great ways to engage your child in learning and creativity is by arts and crafts. Arts and crafts do more than just check the box for their “art” special at school. Arts are a great way to not only bolster their creativity but to also help increase their motivation for learning and school engagement. And what more could a new “homeschooling” parent ask for than for a little extra motivation to help kids want to do school work?

This cute fairy garden set is a great way to get your kids involved in their creative side but also get them outside. You can do this project outside when it is sunny out, letting them enjoy the fresh air and a different environment. The Wee Enchanted Fairy Garden comes with a flower-shaped paintable potting dish, enchanted flower house, gemstones, flowers, butterflies, paint, potting mix and seeds that grow like magic. The plants can grow indoors which makes it the perfect project for any climate. This project is a great project for a unit on plants and the plant cycle as the children can watch as their seeds grow into plants.
The Magical Mixing Hands-On Science kit from Faber-Castell is a great addition to your science curriculum. Your kids can learn about chemical reactions to create cool concoctions like slime, sensory putty, and squishy crystals. They can also watch as they create fizzy bubbles and color transformations. This is a great project for younger children to do on their own or for older kids to enjoy as they read and follow the kid-friendly instructions.
One of the best things about arts (especially when you’re homeschooling) is that much of it can simply be handing your child a new medium, whether that be different crayons, markers, or utensils or different canvases, and allowing them to use their imagination and creativity to create their masterpiece. Gelatos by Faber-Castell are a unique medium in that they are somewhat like watercolors but in crayon form. Each Gelato is mixed with an array of colors creating a unique blended look. The Creating with Gelatos kit comes with 10 Gelatos and 7 different mediums to paint on. It also comes with design ideas if you are looking to create something specific according to your homeschooling lessons.
Another great medium is watercolors. This watercolor art kit from Faber-Castell is a great way to introduce the use of watercolors to your children. It comes with watercolor pencils, a 9 color watercolor palette, 8 sheets of watercolor paper, 1 paintbrush, 1 PITT Artist Pen, and 2 re-usable mixed media stencils in floral themes. Your children can use their creativity to create beautiful works of art or they can use the included stencils to jumpstart their design ideas. To expand on this project, you can have your child watch a few videos on famous watercolor artists or recreate a famous watercolor painting using their own skills.
This aroma jewelry kit by Faber-Castell is a bit of a brain break for your regularly scheduled homeschooling activities. Crafting jewelry is a wonderful activity that can bolster your child’s creative side all while giving them something that isn’t necessarily geared towards any specific learning goal. The kit includes 3 oils (lavendar, orange, and peppermint), 3 dropper caps, a scent diffusing locket, 2 scent diffusing beads, charm assortment with lobster clasps, 2 adjustable necklace chains, adjustable bead bracelet, 3 metal accent circles, and instructions to create necklaces or bracelets. This kit is a great thing to have on hand for days where everyone needs a break from learning.
Another great way to engage your child in lessons about plants and the plant cycle, or about different eco-systems and biomes, is by creating their own terrarium using this Tropical Terrarium kit by Faber-Castell. The kit includes a trendy geometric planting dish, polka-dot hypoestes plant seeds, potting mix, a succulent, and cute flamingo and a golden pineapple for decoration. This project is great for older kids to engage their creative side and then place their new creation in their room for decoration. The plants are easy to grow and it’s a fun way to get your older kids engaged in a craft.
A wonderful way to engage your child’s creative side, as well as work on their literacy skills for homeschooling, is for your child to create their very own storybooks. This Create Your Own Storybook kit from Faber-Castell comes with two hardcover books that are completely customizable. Your child can create their very own story that is in a real-life book, giving them the motivation to write a story to share with friends and family. This a great kit for younger children to help foster a love of reading and work on their fine motor skills. For elementary students, the kit helps work on literacy skills like story-telling, setting, character, and plot.
Does your child love comics or graphic novels? Take that inherent love of something they enjoy and turn it into something creative with this Comic Illustration Kit by Faber-Castell. The kit includes step-by-step instructions on how to create your own characters including drawing shapes, creating shadows, proportions, and body parts. Your child can learn how real comics are made and make their own with instructions on drawing, inking, and coloring just like professional comic book artists. Your child can create their own comic book cover as well as learn from the experts who help develop this kit on what it is like to create their very own comic. This is a great kit for tweens and teens as the drawing tasks are more skillful and difficult.
If your younger child loved their older siblings’ geometric terrarium (see above) and they want to create one for themself, or you just would love a terrarium kit for younger children, then this glow in the dark terrarium kit is a great option. You can use this as a great stepping stone into the discussion of the plant cycle and/or different biomes and how different plants need different things to grow. The cool part about this terrarium kit is that it also glows in the dark! Your child can add glow-in-the-dark stickers to the outside of their terrarium and watch it glow at night. Everything you need to grow your terrarium is included in the kit including: plastic mason-style jar, decorative lid, potting mix, organic chia and wheat grass seeds, garden figurines, decorative sand, river stones, and a plant mister to keep your terrarium watered.
Another fun terrarium activity, especially for the mermaid lovers out there, is this cute Mini Garden Mermaid Terrarium kit. The kit includes potting mix, quick-growing chia seeds, mermaid-themed stickers, pearl dimensional accents, fun mini-figures, and decorative colored sand to create your own personal mermaid garden. The chia seeds begin growing in just a few days, so your child can watch the plant life cycle in a quick time. This is a great activity for expansion on ocean life and ocean plants and is a creative way to engage learning while doing an arts and craft activity.
Homeschooling can seem daunting for those who haven’t done it before (and didn’t plan on doing it) but there are so many resources and activities available to families to help make learning engaging and fun even during this stressful time. Adding arts and crafts to your homeschooling curriculum can help your child have fun while learning, motivate them to continue learning, and give their brains a much-needed break from traditional school activities. These arts and crafts kits by Faber-Castell make those art activities much easier to come by and give your kids something to look forward to while they are stuck at home.
