12 WEEKS- Beginning of 2nd TRIMESTER

I can’t believe I am now officially in my 2nd trimester ( according to some sources. others don’t count 2nd trimester until the end of the 13th week)


How far along: 12 weeks.

How big is baby: It’s a plum.

Total weight gain: 1.5-2 lbs ( I am at 136lb right now)

Sleep: Thanks to my relaxation apps, the sleep has been wonderful.

Best moment of the week: ULTRASOUND! We had our 12 week ultrasound on Wednesday. It was the first time we actually saw a real baby in there. Our first ultrasound was a blob in the middle of the screen. This time it was absolutely amazing! The second we saw the baby, it pushed off the uterine wall and jumped to the opposite side of the sac while turning our back to us. It was so cute. Afterwards it kept moving and jumping slowly but was very cooperative and everything was measured the first time. The Nuchal Fold measurements were fabulous. So now I am waiting on the bloodwork to get the complete results of the Down Syndrome screening.
So everything looked really good, but the tech REFUSED to let us see the genitals. 🙂 lol She gave us a straight out NO! I don’t see what it would have hurt, but whatever, we’ll find out in September.
We shot a small video, not from the beginning unfortunately, because my hubby is a fumbler and couldn’t find the iPhone and then the camera on my iphone ( lol), but it’s still pretty amazing.

Food cravings: Still nothing. I’ve been eating cheddar as a way of adding calories, and I enjoy it more than ever before, but again it’s not an actual craving. I have more ,like, preferences, it seems, not actual cravings.

Food aversions: The aversions are getting better, at least aversion to food in general. I still can’t stand the idea of eating lettuce or sardines, but it might be because they remind me of the horror I had to go through.

Nausea – It’s slowly getting better. I still get it pretty bad in the evenings, but I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Heartburn – still there, but not as bad
Skin – I keep waiting for it to clear up- NOPE- it’s stubborn.
Round Ligament Pains: I think a few days ago I felt my first bouts of round ligament pains. Nothing since then, but it felt ….”different”.

Gender: At our 20 week ultrasound.

What I’m looking forward to: Finding out the results of the down syndrome screen in a few days.

What I miss:
SUSHI! ( I really need to order a sushi kit and make my own, but I hate cooking right now, so i don’t know if it’d get much use)
BEING THIN (I feel I am getting fat. And not the pregnant fat- that I can live with- I am afraid I am getting simply fat: my legs, my stomach, it’s just scary looking to me. I know it might not seem that way to you, but I was sooo much fitter and skinnier 6 months ago, I just really miss that state.
Playing tennis and rollerblading: it’s too hot to play and with the balls flying everywhere and the amount of exersion tennis gives me it’s just not safe.

Next appt: August 5th. (by the way, what happens on the non-ultrasound appointments? What’s the point of going to the doctor every month?)

      My definition of fat is a bit different than what most people’s are. I never judge fat based on the size, cuz everyone has different structures and sizes, I judge “fat” based on just that: the amount of fat deposits. I might look fine sizewise, but my legs instead of being all muscle have a lot of fat 🙁 (damn you pregnancy nausea lol), so is my mid section now.
      And thank you! I appreciate you saying I don’t look fat! 🙂

    The Doctor will go over some different info. He/she will check in on you, ask you how you’re feeling, and then they will listen for a heartbeat. Once they get the BPM, that’s basically it. There are some tests you may have to do, and they always do a urine sample to check your blood sugar level. They also track your weight gain. Around 24 weeks they will take a tape measure and start “measuring” you.
    That’s about it. Non-ultrasound appointments are usually pretty speedy, and mostly focus on how you’re feeling.

    The monthly appts can get a little routine/boring, but are important. They’ll check your urine each for protein/bacteria/etc. Weigh you, check your blood pressure, around 20ish weeks start measuring your fundal height, listen for baby and answer any questions you have, as well as let you know what kinds of things you need to let them know about or be concerned about.

    Please don’t say you feel fat- you are growing a human being!

      I’m not saying I’m fat fat. I just feel instead of getting “pregnant fat”, I am just filling up with fat in other areas. I am ok with getting big as a part of growing a human being thing. But I just want to keep it there, and not get fat deposits because I’m trying to eat 2000 calories.

      You’ll may also have some blood work, and a gestational diabetes test, during the routine monthly visits. And try to keep in mind that you may only have one visit between the 12 week check up and the 20 week check up, so it may feel like you will receive an ultrasound quite often. The ultrasounds slow down, and the visits pick up, though, shortly after that point in time. I’m 39w1d today with our second ? Good luck!

        I was told to come back once a month, which means you’re right- I’ll probably only have 1 visit before my 20th week ultrasound. Congrats on being on your last week of pregnancy! I feel like I’m so far from that! Have a great labor and delivery soon! 🙂 So exciting!

    Yeah, I have the choice through my insurance to see a DR, or a Midwife, and I chose to see my midwife because she’s very available, and typically the doctors are known for not coming to their patients births, however, the midwives will. But I have Kaiser Permanente (and HMO) so things are different. When I go in for my check ups, I meet with my midwife. She checks the BPM, talks about how I’m feeling, and orders any tests that are applicable for that time. I didn’t get my diabetes blood work test until this last appointment at 26 weeks (I’m 26 wks 1 day today, woohoo, almost 3rd trimester!)
    I’ve done a few elective ultrasounds because she wasn’t cooperative with gender determination (one at 16 weeks, the “normal” one at 20 weeks, and one last week at 25 weeks) but if I hadn’t had elective ones through private companies, they typically do not do ultrasounds until week 34-36 after the 20 week one. My next one won’t be until then, and it’s basically to find out how big the baby is, and if they are presenting correctly for birth.

    how about doing pre-natal pilates at home? somehting like this maybe?
    or with an instructor? i am doing regular pilates on a reformer with an instructor at her home studio 2 times a week and 3 times in her the gym class on the mat. just in one month I have toned up a lot.

      What work out to do isn’t an issue. The issue has been that I’ve been too sick to work out. Today is my first day in 2 months and I feel I lost all the tone. I used to do pilates daily before pregnancy and when I wasn’t so sick I was doing special pregnancy work out, but the last two months of no activity besides walking has really taken a toll on my body.
      I hope when I pick it back up permanently again I won’t feel like I am gaining fat but actually getting my muscle tone back.

    awww i love this! You don’t look pregnant at all (in a good way), you will be one of those totally skinny pregnant chicks)))) Anyway, i’ve wanted to ask you a question for a while- you know a lot about nutrition, and i was wondering about sushi- i eat it 2-3 times a week- is it good or bad for you? And is it fattening?

      Oh no sushi is great! In a perfect world it would be made out of brown rice rather than white, but otherwise it’s just fish, veggies. Mayo and cream cheese are the only bad things but they are in such a small amount that it really doesn’t matter. If you’re concerned about calories you might want to eat less batterfried sushi ( what do u call that?), it’s not the healthiest in large quantities. Just pick healthier options once in a while and remember that the tastier rolls tend to have 600-800 calories per roll 😉 so yeah it can get pretty fattening.

      You can’t have sushi during pregnancy because of raw fish that tends to harbor bacteria that is harmful for the baby, but even if you get cooked sushi, there’s a question on of how that food was handled (e.coli, bacteria) and mercury. Now if you make sushi at home that’s a different story, because you know how you handle fish, as long as you stay away from raw.

    You know, you’re right. I can see the fat a bit. Looking back at your old photos, I can see a difference. Your skin, your thighs, your stomach (obviously)…even your hair is stragglier. Oh well, it’s all in exchange of being a mom! Hope all goes well with your bloodwork.

      LOL 🙂 My hair was scraggly because it was semi-wet from the shower, and the skin was photoshoped (I’d never post a pic of me with horrible skin like I have now- gross!), but yeah the rest is definitely 100% changed, especially when compared to old photos. Thanks for the bloodwork wishes 🙂

    ok i see! Good advice, thank you! I usually eat sushi with salmon, cucumber, and avocado! My fave combination, i don’t really get anything else))) Sometimes i would buy the philadelphia roll, which has cream cheese in it, but i don’t really like cream cheese :/

    Have you read The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy? She is a model type, super gorgeous and she says that the minute she gets pregnant she gets biker shorts of cellulite – from her knees to waist. That always cracked me up and made me feel better. It goes away after if you work at it and you will so don’t worry. Congrats on surviving the 1st trimester!

      Ahahaha biker shorts of cellulite- yup that’s pretty much it! Whew! Makes me feel better that my “fatness” is still from pregnancy and not from eating 🙂 lol

    You look completely NORMAL. 😉

    They’ll always listen for the heartbeat, and check on you and see how you’re feeling, watch out for any concerns, etc. Think of it as preventative or staying on top of things. There are things that can be detected just by seeing how much or how little weight you’re putting on (which is an indicator of how the baby is growing). Just suck up the extra attention. My favorite part of being pregnant? Getting to the front of any line almost anywhere. Oh yeah, baby, I worked it! 😀

      Thanks, Gina! I really hope I won’t need the photos, because I’ll do all I can to get back there- I have to. And the ultrasound video is watched in our home at least twice a day 🙂

    I loved watching the sweet little video. Ultrasound technology has definitely improved. I don’t remember mine being that clear 14 years ago!

    Beautiful picture and happy 12 weeks! Wanted to tell you that I had literally awesome skin up to the point of getting pregnant and then it went oddly downhill…acne, breakouts even rashes on my arm that I still deal with all these months later! I also couldn’t eat salad at all…but, I loved sub sandwiches so that was how I ate my veggies;0. Your ultrasound is soooo awesome!!!
