-“Hey, Lexi, remember when we went to Switzerland and visited a local farm!”
-“No!”
-“What do you mean no? We got stranded on the train? After Italy? When we did that 30 day winter Europe trip over Christmas”?
-“Nope!”
Whomp whomp! Nothing is more disappointing than spending thousands of dollars and weeks of time to take your child to explore Europe only to find out that they don’t even remember it a few years later.
Why take them if they won’t even remember? That’s the biggest argument I get against taking young children around the world. Obviously, if you know me even a little bit, I don’t let that stop me, for so many reasons.

But of course, it sucks to not have them remember the trips they have taken.
I have found two ways to help that “situation“. One is taking a lot of pictures and videos ( which we do) and discuss them afterwards, going over places visited and things done. You can also do what I do and create a whole gallery of travels on the wall (since we travel SO MUCH, we have to limit it to 1 photo per destination)
Travel Maps with Push Pins for Kids and Adults
Another way to help them remember where they have traveled is their own world travel maps with push pins. It is super fun to tag all the places you visited and making it their own helps them take pride in their travel achievements.

What I loved about my push pin map is the deep blue of the oceans and the subdued colors of the land. It looks striking on the wall. We decided that we will only mark spots that Joe and I both have been to. Link to buy is below.
Lexi’s travel map with push pins is more whimsical with Dr Seuss’ quote at the bottom ( my favorite quote, by the way). She loved finding places she had traveled to ( with my help) and putting a pin in. It was a little difficult to pin the spots with the map hanging on the wall for her, so she needed my help.
I think it not only makes her proud of all the places she has been but also helps get excited about new places to go ( even if it’s just to “put a pin in it”)
So far she has traveled to 17 countries, which she is very proud of. We still have to work on the geography part of things but the travel maps and the manual push pins are working great. In addition to these push pin maps, we are also using an interactive Globe (similar to this one) and a scratch off map to nurture her love of travel and to teach her geography!
