I am so excited to share with you the exact routine I use for my own liver detox, as well as some additional tips that will help keep your liver working optimally.
By the time you are 30 and many cases well before 30, you have taxed your liver so much that it’s barely keeping up. With all the synthetic hormones in pills and our water supply, toxic metals, prescription meds, poor gut and hormonal health, diet heavy in pesticides and processed foods, it’s no wonder so many people are experiencing signs of struggling liver. Unfortunately, these symptoms aren’t investigated by traditional doctors and if they are bothersome enough are just covered up with further Rx meds that only exacerbate the problem giving our liver additional toxins to process.
( if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your doctor, or reach out to me to make sure that all herb and supplement recommendations are safe for you)
Note: these are ALL the products that I take myself while doing a liver detox and my family takes as support. It has been thoroughly researched, and the brands have been vetted by me to be pure and with highest quality ingredients.
Table of Contents
YOUR DIET AND MORNING ROUTINE
Start with warm water with lemon and a slice of ginger.
Follow it up with freshly squeezed celery juice
A great way to continue the day is a liver smoothie or juice (recipes at the bottom)
While you’re doing a detox, it would really help your liver and your digestion if you focus on consuming broths, smoothies, juices and soups. Add proteins from beans, nuts, seeds and wild seafood (sardines, salmon and trout), organic chicken if necessary.
HOW LONG TO DO A DETOX FOR
I would recommend at a minimum 14 days of detoxing, but ideally 30 days. What I mean by that is a stricter elimination of foods, focus on liver – supporting foods and strict adherence to supplements. After that period of time, you can relax a little but still still take certain supplements and try to have a smoothie or so a day with liver-loving foods. Supplements to continue taking after the detox include Liver Love and Metal Detox set.
WATER INTAKE
Make sure you’re drinking as much water as possible. As your body is detoxing, you need to hydrate it to keep the toxins moving out of your body. If you’re experiencing headaches, fatigue, muscle aches or brain fog during the first few days of the detox, the most likely culprit is not enough water. Aim for 100-120 ounces of water a day at the minimum.
THINGS TO AVOID
These are hard on the liver and you’d do yourselves a favor if you cut them out for the duration of the detox and limit them afterwards.
- processed foods
- cafeine
- sugar
- alcohol
- red meat
- tuna
- corn
- oils
- painkillers
- SODA ( it does horrible things to the liver)
FOODS TO ADD
All these foods are excellent liver support and some actual help detox the liver during the detox and after. I recommend printing it and taping it to your fridge to be reminded when you go to cook. Try to only buy organic for this period of time as it will lighten the load of pestecides and preservatives plus other toxins for liver to process.
- bitter vegetables
- artichoke
- lettuce
- escarole
- arugula
- bitter greens
- bittermelon
- parsley
- celery
- broccoli
- kale
- watercrest
- cabbage
- bok choy
- brussels sprouts
- asparagus
- avocado
- beets
- berries
- sour citrus
- cranberries
- pomegranate
- garlic
- onion
- mushrooms
- green tea
- flax and chia seeds
- walnuts
- water
- spices
WHAT IF I CANNOT DO EVERYTHING HERE?
Nobody is perfect, and it’s understandable if you cannot do ALL the steps below, avoid all the foods or incorporate all the foods. Doing something is better than nothing. The goal here is to give you a good regimen that will bring results and you can adjust it to your abilities and lifestyles. If you can follow everything, amazing! If you are very new to healthy living or taking supplements or eating healthy, and you want to start slow, that’s ok, too. As long as you keep your expectations relevant to the amount of work and effort you put into it. If you need help figuring out the perfect balance for you, reach out and I’ll help you determine the most important steps and what you can forgo.
For example, I will always take my metal detox and my liver love supplements, but sometimes I don’t make a liver smoothie when I run out of time, or I forget to drink a lot of water. Ideally, we want to do it all, but this is life and no one is perfect. At the very least if you can commit to all the supplements and the herbal tea, you will already be supporting your liver in ways that most people don’t.
SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL
LIVER MOVING HERBS
These specific herbs and supplements will aid your liver in Phase I and Phase II detoxification process and help it recover from overworking. You should take these daily if you can.
BITTER BREW
This is a brewed tea that tastes similar to coffee in its bitterness. Here are the herbs to buy for it and the recipe below.
HERBS FOR THE TEA
RECIPE
Combine the roots with two cups of water in a small pot. Bring to boil, then reduce the heat and let simmer covered for 20 minutes strain and enjoy hot or iced.
2 teaspoons of burdock root
1 teaspoon of roasted chicory root
1 teaspoon of dandelion root
METAL DETOX
This is a very powerful heavy metal detox to be used at all times (not just during a liver detox). It binds to toxins in your blood and your gut, eliminating the need for your liver to work as hard. Since it has no side effects and is completely safe and we are constantly consuming water, food and using personal products with heavy metals in them, I recommend taking this set continuously. The cheapest way to do it is to get on autoship (so you don’t run out) since you can get $50 off your first order. Please continue using this AFTER you are done with the liver detox. It is safe and will keep your body free of heavy metals that continuously enter our body and have to be eliminated through the liver
LIVER DETOX SUPPORT SUPPLEMENTS
These supplements are important during the detox, with Liver Love to be taken continuously after detox, as well, to help support the liver. Do not skip on these! They are as important as the previous ones.
PLANT-BASED EATER
If you are a plant-based eater, supplement with the following and add more protein into your diet for the duration of the detox ( seeds, nuts, soy )
GUT HEALTH
Gut health and liver health go hand in hand ( add to that hormonal health), so you have to make sure your gut is at the minimum supported. I have specific recommendations on healing the gut, but since detox is focused on the liver, I will keep it out of the article. If you want to do a gut detox at the same time ( which I would highly recommend because they are very similar), please let me know and I will direct you to the right routine.
I RECOMMEND THIS PROBIOTIC:
LIFE AFTER THE DETOX
You can’t just go back to normal after you complete a detox, so to continue supporting your liver, make sure to keep taking the following supplements below, along with an herbal or whole foods based multi-vitamin and mineral (recommendations below).
I also HIGHLY recommend getting a full body natural support system like this one. My whole extended family is on it and it’s incredible. It supports all organ functions, gives energy, helps sleep, brain function, liver, gut and stress management all in 3 pills a day. I don’t recommend starting it until after detox because one of the pills contains green tea caffeine which is to be avoided during detox. If you have trouble with sleep and gut, you can take the other two pills during the detox and add the first pill once you complete the detox. This is my absolutely favorite supplement of all times.
